A huge police operation is underway to find a 26-year-old British tourist who vanished after going on a hike in Greece.

The man, who has not yet been named, hasn’t been seen since Sunday, according to officials.

His phone has also been deactivated, while his car was found yesterday at 8pm in a nearby village of Mikro Papigo.

Local media reports that he was staying at a hotel in Konitsa, northwestern Greece, and left on Sunday morning to go hiking in the Zagoria district.

His father is reported to have called the 112 emergency number on Monday after he failed to return to his hotel and a rescue operation was immediately launched.

Searches remained ongoing today.

The man’s disappearance comes months after history buff John Tossell , who was on holiday in Zante with his partner, went for a walk and never came back.

Partner Gillian waited by the pool for John

The 73-year-old told partner Gillian Griffiths he wanted to visit the monastery at the top of Mount Skopos near his hotel.

Gillian headed to the pool with a book and waited for him to come back from his walk on June 17.

But John has never returned.

The couple were on a last-minute trip and arrived on the island on June 14.

Gillian previously said: “Every holiday we went on, John went walking as he was very fit, active and loved history.

“On the morning of June 17, he said he was going for a walk, maybe only 30 minutes or perhaps longer, but not to worry.

“He said to take my bathers and book to the pool and that he would see me later. He took 10 Euros and a bottle of water and left at around 9.30am.”

After he failed to return, Gillian raised the alarm and a full scale search was carried out by the police.

The last confirmed sighting of John was at a café near the monastery at around 3pm on Monday, June 17.

He spoke to a lady who was aged between 45 and 55 with shoulder-length blonde hair and her partner.

“It’s like he disappeared off the face of Zante and we have to conclude it could be foul play,” said Gillian.

“We just desperately want John found as soon as possible.”
