A self-made millionaire has opened up about how she managed to turn her life around after being expelled from school at 15 years old.

Kate Stewart appears on Channel 4’s Secret Teacher tonight, during which she goes back to school in a bid to help kids.

Appearing on This Morning today, she spoke about working as an undercover support staff.

At Parkwood Academy she met Zain Ali, who appeared on the sofa next to her today and said that she noticed his “entrepreneurial flair”.

“I think the problem is that there is just one way of teaching in schools,” Kate told hosts Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford. “Everyone judges you on your qualifications.”

Asked how she managed to get where she is today without her qualifications, Kate said that she was persistent until her personality won employers over.

“People like Zain learn practically and not through the theory textbooks,” Kate explained. “And we need to acknowledge that not everybody is exactly the same.”

Opening up about her own experience: “I was going to get a job and I had no experience and no qualifications, the door was just shut in my face everywhere I went.

“I had to keep going and knocking on the door and in the end they’d seen my personality and thought, ‘ok’.”

However she also stressed that education was important.

She added: “As long as you’ve tried your best in exams, then you’ve got nothing to be sorry for.”
