A woman has died after allegedly being doused in petrol and turned into a fireball by her jealous fiancé.
Anastasia Kovaleva, 22, was allegedly set alight by Vitaly Chaikovsky, 28, who reportedly wanted to scare her into not dumping him.
Chaikovsky is accused of carrying out the shocking act on July 2 in the city of Zaporizhia, southern Ukraine.
On evening of that day, Chaikovsky allegedly accused Anastasia of flirting with other men, according to reports.
The couple started quarrelling and soon after that Anastasia left their apartment going to take a walk and give her jealous fiancé time to calm down, reports said.
While she was away, Chaikovsky allegedly went to a nearby gas station and bought a bottle of petrol.
He then allegedly waited for her to return near the entrance to their apartment block, local media report.
When Anastasia approached the place, Chaikovsky is accused of dousing her with the liquid and using his lighter to set her on fire.
According to witnesses, the woman immediately turned into a fireball screaming in unbearable pain.
Chaikovsky allegedly then ripped his T-shirt off and tried to put out the fire.
Neighbour Valentina said to local media: ”We heard horrific screams. Someone was shouting, ‘A woman is burning!’
”My husband grabbed a canister with water and I grabbed a blanket and we raced to the scene.
”We managed to put out the victim and called emergency services.”
Anastasia was rushed in the intensive care in critical condition. She was diagnosed with severe burns to 90 per cent of her body.
Paramedic Olga Zakharchenko said: ”The victim’s condition was very grave. She received severe burns to her head, upper body and arms.”
Doctors from Zaporizhia City Hospital performed several skin grafting surgeries but Anastasia died yesterday despite all the efforts to save her life.
Vitaly Chaikovsky was arrested at the scene. Police found him sitting on the ground and looking at his hands covered with burns.
The man received medical help and was taken into custody. He confessed to the crime saying ‘he just wanted to scare Anastasia and make sure she would not dump him’.
Later, during court hearings, Chaikovsky said: ”I did not want to hurt her. I wanted to scare her and make sure she would not dump me.”
The victim’s female friend told local media: ”Anastasia really loved him and was going to marry him.
”Vitaly was constantly jealous of her. He read every message on her phone. He was always nervous and suspicious when she was chatting with her male friends or acquaintances.
”They were together for a year and he was jealous of her from the very beginning of their relationship.”
Chaikovsky was charged with attempted murder but now, after Anastasia’s death, his case is expected to be treated as murder.
He faces 15 years in prison if found guilty. The investigation is ongoing.
